Back from the Great Escape

Well, it’s back home to Bristol and the swift realisation that we live in amazing luxury and don’t even realise. To lie on a sofa, watch tv, and have hot water at the twist of a tap just seems unimaginably easy. Nothing like living in a bothy on the west coast to make you appreciate things.

Reuben is in fine form, and is slowly learning the finer points of rugby through endless repeats on Sky TV. He’s still a bit vague about recycling possession in the ruck and maul, but then again he’s a German Shepherd so I guess it’ll take him a bit of time to understand the great game. He’s good at penalties though. He’s loving Bristol by the way, particularly as I’m training for the marathon at the moment so we’re covering loads of miles every day, He insists on running with a massive stick in his mouth. I tried it once and it’s particularly knackering.

Speaking of rugby, one of my more foolish decisions was to take Linda on in a fishing competition whilst in Applecross, for which the forfeit was wearing the opposing nations shirt and fishnet stockings when watching the Scotland v’s England match this Saturday. Sadly the crew on my fishing boat were terminally hungover, and we got thrashed. If there’d been a vomiting competition we would have walked it mind you. Anyway, I shall be bellowing Flower of Scotland in the pub wearing sussies and stockings and the blue jersey this weekend. I shall be very disappointed if I don’t get chinned by an irate Bristolian.

Thanks so much for all the feedback about the show. I’ve had hundreds of emails from people who – I’m delighted to say – share the same feelings about the magic of the west coast as I do. I read some of them out to Reubs, who yawns, breaks wind, then bimbles off to look for a stick. He’s obviously heard it all before.

Various ideas bouncing around for what to do next - I'll keep you posted.

All the best, Mont
