Monty has been speaking on the conference, and after dinner circuit for the last decade, and has gained a reputation as an extremely dynamic, thought provoking, amusing presence on the podium.
The presentations vary from key note speeches addressing audiences of several thousand through to small intimate dinners and seminars. As such one talk may be alongside Sir Bob Geldof and Jesse Jackson to over a thousand delegates at an international business conference, and the next may be to ten UK Sport Elite Coaches. Each talk is different and addresses the specific needs of the organisation in question, although the general theme is the extraordinary things people and teams do when the pressure is applied. Such anecdotes are based on over twenty years leading expeditions, including a decade as an officer in the Royal Marine Commando’s, and more contemporary experiences making wildlife and adventure documentaries around the globe. An example of the presentation themes include:
Uncharted Territories: A general exploration of the human animal under stress, whether in the rainforests of Central America, face to face with a great white off the tip of Africa, or under fire from poachers in Malawi. A revealing set of tall tales, illustrated with images and video clips, of how we all behave when the chips are down.
Beyond the Horizon: How to maintain the aim in a wildly fluctuating environment. We all live in the changing world, and Monty explores the themes of how we all deal with change. As in all his talks, this is illustrated with stories of individuals and teams getting it magnificently right and hideously wrong. In the uncertainties of the modern world, this talk is proving hugely popular, with several powerful take home messages for the audience that consistent feedback shows have real value in the work environment of today.
The Human Animal: A detailed analysis of how a team breaks down when the heat is applied, with analysis of the stages of transition from forming through to dissipating. This talk also examines each individual niche within a team, who fills it, what the implications are for the team as a whole when the relevant roles remain unfilled. This talk is based on over twenty years of observing teams from all backgrounds, creeds and experience levels in a massive range of environments, and as such is drawn from direct experience – these are the roles we all fill in any team. Once again, a very popular talk in a changing world!
